Slick as A Whistle

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

It almost feels like cleaning the kitchen cupboards. Everything is such a mess while you are doing it!

The restucture will probably be slow for a while. Only two of my sites are online at least for now. I will be adding a good lot of stuff, but I am certainly going back to the more static website content.  I may have a whole lot of things to talk about as I get through this changeover.

I have other domains that begin with “winning” so be prepared to see more as winningwayhosting, and winningwaysecrets go live. Or maybe I will preface them with cwinsonline-hosting,

I did move my blog, so if you want past issues you can still find them at http://www.cwinsonline-wordpress.com it was a fast and safe way to back up the word press blog.  If ever you can’t read the newsletter in your email you can almost always find the latest online minus any advertising.

 New House

A family had spent the day moving from their farmhouse into a brand new house in a development nearby.

Very early the next morning, their 3 year-old son ran in to
the parent’s bedroom to wake them up.

The mother dressed him and told him to play in the yard.

About 20 minutes later, he came running back.

“Mommy, Mommy,” he exclaimed, “Everybody has doorbells – and they all work!”

Defeat The Virus

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

I have been hearing all day even the last couple of days so much information about a new viral flu. I know that you have been listening to this too. I can’t help but feel that so much attention to it with fear as its impetus can in fact create a panic.

Fear can be a horrible thing in people who have just enough information to make it dangerous. Precautions are simple. Wash you hands often. Stay out of crowds if you have sniffles and especially stay home if you have a fever. Germs seem to be something people spread without thinking.

Viruses on the Internet can spread just as quickly and often in what seems to be a benign. Viruses can be attached to email containing images. Viruses have been known to be attached to greeting cards sent via the web. A virus can be added to a site through forms that are not protected against accepting certain strings of information.

Before anything is sent from you, or received by you be sure that it going through an email scanner. Delete anything in question no matter who it is from.

I said, “Nothing.”

She said, “You did that yesterday.”

Tips and Techniques

Of all the virus software out there the one that keeps winning prizes at least as far as I am concerned is AVG. The free version does a great job. I believe that I have used all of the major software products and have always gone back to AVG. Just like good handwashing is essential a good virus software is your first line of defense.

Good Morning!

Everyone knows, success is not an accident. Neither is failure. Both are a direct result of consistent activities. The trick is to learn as quickly as possible which activities lead to success and which ones don’t..

But just how do you know which road to take? In this era of technology we are no longer guided by the stars or even a golden compass. We now have a GPS system and the Internet. It is surprising that people don’t hardly even talk to one another they text! We are back to writing only now it’s so much faster.

But writing isn’t even writing. You see things like LOL, or BFF. What about IRL! Can you understand all of these shortened shorthand that is used on line and in texting? I found a great site that is a dictionary for all of those little acrynoms that will help you to understand all of those terms. Be cool and even get adept to using them yoursefl. OK Carolyn, stop talking and just give em the link. Well, here it is..

Abbott and Costello Routine

Searching in my library for two books by communications expert Deborah Tannen turned into an Abbott and Costello routine.

“What’s the first book?” the librarian asked.

“That’s Not What I Meant,” I said.

“Well, what did you mean?”

“That’s the title of the book,” I explained.

“Okay.” She looked at me a little skeptically. “And the other book?”

“You Just Don’t Understand.”

“Excuse me?” I got both books. Eventually.

Tips and Techniques

Another day to wake up to bad news. It seems that I have been suspended from Twitter. Why, because Google said that winassoc.com had bad ware attached to it. We got the notice at the end of March that the site had in fact been hacked. It was cleaned up within 24 hours to make it perfectly perfect again, but getting the warning off the site is taking its toll. It is the website owners responsibility to make sure a site is safe and does take constant alertness to these gremlins that like to invade other’s property. The net is no different. We are doing everything possible to get this alert off the site. It is clean and it is safe.

Organizing Files 2

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Yesterday we talked a little about files and organizing the files on your computer. Did you start putting things in order yet?

The next files to put order in are all of those eBooks you have been collecting. Can you imagine a library just putting everything anyplace? Books and yes even eBooks can represent a very large investment.

First of all what kind of ebooks are your collecting? Can you see a logical categorization of them? Create a folder for each category, perhaps things like:
Marketing
Product Manuals
Accounting Practices
Ezine Management
and so on.

Then put the eBooks in your collection inside of those folders. Your file system will put them in alphabetical order for you.

The next thing you might want to do is to print a copy of each directory. There is an application called 2X explorer that you can get that makes the job of doing this quite easy. It’s free and easy to use. http://www.free-downloads.net/downloads/2xExplorer/

Once you have printed a list of your eBooks, you can use your list to create a card catalog, or a database or just the list that’s up to you.

Nurses in Heaven

Three nurses went to heaven, and were awaiting their turn with St. Peter to plead their case to enter the pearly gates. The first nurse said, “I worked in an emergency room. We tried our best to help patients, even though occasionally we did lose one. I think I deserve to go to heaven.”

St. Peter looks at her file and admits her to heaven.
The second nurse says, “I worked in an operating room. It’s a very high stress environment and we do our best. Sometimes the patients are too sick and we lose them, but overall we try very hard.”

St. Peter looks at her file and admits her to heaven.

The third nurse says, “I was a case manager for an HMO.”

St. Peter looks at her file. He pulls out a calculator and starts punching away at it furiously, constantly going back to the nurse’s file. After a few minutes St. Peter looks up, smiles, and says, “Congratulations! You’ve been admitted to heaven … for five days!”

Tips and Techniques

Go to your folder with your eBooks. Right click on one of the eBooks and a dialog box will pop up. Go to properties on that dialog box. You can fill in the form with Name, Author, a brief description and other information about that file. Key words will help you to find the file again. In research I have found this to be one of my best defenses when I ask myself, “now where did I read that?”

One of my favorite stories is Peter Pan written by author James Barri. The story as you know is about a boy that refused to grow up. What fun is there is growing up? What excitement is there in growing up?

Not everyone can be the story teller that James Barri was, but everyone does have stories to tell. Everyone has memories. Everyone has parents and grandparents who may remember things differently.

Such stories and memories make for great content for blogs and family web sites. Such stories can knit families together. I am talking about families that have been separated by geography.

Talk to your parents, talk to your grandparents write the stories down. I can guarantee they won’t be around forever. Some of the exciting things you can do is video, audio and story telling. It is so easy with the technology we have today that all it takes is a bit of imagination and a love of history – documenting family history.

Name

Some friends were hoping their second child would be a girl, and they even had a name picked out. The ultrasound didn’t reveal the baby’s sex, though, and since the expectant father had orders from the Navy to ship out before the due date, he told his wife, “We’d better pick out a boy’s name, just in case.” But when it was time for him to report for duty, they still hadn’t decided.

At sea a few weeks later, he got notification that his son,
Justin Kase, had been born.

Tips and Techniques

Blogging is one of the fastest and easiest platforms to master in developing a site on line. The steps are even easier.

1. Get a domain name: try http://www.cheapdomains.com
2. Get hositing (I will give you hosting for as little as $60.00 for a year and even install your blog for you.)
3. Using Fantastico you can have your blog installed and ready to go in about 15 minutes.
4. Write a post every day. It doesn’t have to be a lot. A memory or two a day will help you get started.
5. Invite other family members to contribute.

Challenge

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

I never thought that I would look forward to listening to the news, and you are right for most of it I am not, but there is one segment in the news that I look forward to listening to and that is simply the good news that does in fact happen.

I truly believe that most people want to be good. I believe that most people have respect for their neighbors. I also believe when the times get tough that is when the good in people shines through.

Times that are tough as it has been said, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” There are times when we just plain have to stop and look at things and I do believe that life gets tough just to see how tough we are, don’t you? Challenges are just as important to our life as the good times. Challenges make us appreciative of the success.

I thank God every day for the challenges because every one of them made me the person I am today. I didn’t like it when some of them were happening. I still don’t like it when I see people having to struggle, but I also know you can’t help the butterfly out of the cacoon, he has to struggle his way out or his wings will never be strong enough to fly.

VCR Skills

While reviewing math symbols with my second-grade pupils, I drew a greater-than (>) and a less-than (<) sign on the chalkboard and asked, “Does anyone remember what these mean?”

A few moments passed, and then a boy confidently raised his hand. “One means fast-forward,” he exclaimed, “and the other means rewind!”

OnGuard Online
http://www.onguardonline.gov/default.aspx

I stumbled on this site created by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the OnGuard website “provides practical tips from the federal government and the technology industry to help you be on guard against Internet fraud, secure your computer, and protect your personal information.” No matter what I do to protect my computer, things manage to get through. The point is you can never learn too much about safety.

I found when I got there not only an attractively put together site, but it’s the three main sections from the homepage include “Topics”, “Games”, and “Videos”.

Visitors should start with the “Topics” area, which includes interactive features on proper computer
disposal, cross-border scams, email scams, and identity theft. Within this section (and all of the other sections), visitors will find a quick quiz that will allow them to learn about a number of topical issues. Moving on,
the “Games” area features hands-on activities that include “Invasion of the Wireless Hackers”, “Invest Quest”, and “Phishing Scams”.

Finally, users shouldn’t miss out on the “Tools” area. Here they can find helpful software and applications related to online security and also sign up to subscribe to receive cyber security tips.

Security is so so important in our cyber world. It is the guy that thinks, “It will never happen to me” that leaves himself vulnerable.

A Cat’s Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed looks soft and deep…
I’ll move right into the center groove
So my humans can hardly move!
I’ve trapped their legs,
they’re tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and “I want food!”
I sneak up slowly to begin
Then nibble on my human’s chin.
They wake up quickly,
I have sharp teeth –
And my claws I will unsheathe
For the morning’s here
and it’s time to play
I always seem to get my way.
So thank you Lord for giving me
These human beings that I see.

In my humble opinion AVG- Free is still the best security measure you can take. I got away from it and tried others that came recommended highly, but in the last 6 months I have had to wipe out the c-drive and start over 3 times. Not such a recommendation for the products I was using. In the years previous that I was using AVG, I never had to wipe out the hard drive until they had to be replaced because of wear.

How To:

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Everyone has a book somewhere inside. Someone else wants to learn something that only you know. It is getting the book out of your head and into the hands of the people who want to know that make up the boom in this means of communication called the Internet.

Never before has the flow of communication been so International or so personal. But you know that or you wouldn’t be reading this newsletter right now.

If you didn’t have the dream of making a living from your business on the Internet you probably wouldn’t be advertising on this or other eZines.

Making a living on the Internet requires some very basic purposes

First is the desire to be your own boss
Second is good computer equipment
Third is a way to connect to the Internet
Then you need an idea. It doesn’t have to even be a brilliant idea, but a way to present what you know so that it will appeal to those that want to know what you already know and do well.

In this economy whether it is good in your world or bad in your world the basics never change. Yes I did say never. You must SELL something to SOMEONE if you are going to EARN anything.

The key question then becomes what can I sell? What should I sell? Whether you are selling yourself as a consultant, your own product or other people’s products alignment to your basic purposes and values is going to help determine the who, what, where, when and how. Ethics, immagination and creativity. That is what is going to get you where you want to go.

Deer

The Wednesday-night church service coincided with the last day of hunting season.

Our pastor asked who had bagged a deer.

No one raised a hand.

Puzzled, the pastor said, “I don’t get it. Last Sunday many of you said you were missing because of hunting season. I had the whole congregation pray for your deer.”

One hunter groaned, “Well, it worked. They’re all safe.”

Spending

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

We are hearing a lot about government spending and protests. Matter of fact there is a new acronym – TEA- meaning Taxed Enough Already.

Budgeting is not a fun thing to do whether you are a single adult trying to go to school, a young family even with both adults working, A business cannot operate long without cash flow.

What are some of the basics of living or working within your income?

So many new people in business expect the big bonuses from the work they do and get very disappointed when they barely make ends meet. Just like government the answer is never borrowing. A rule I learned from my grandfather was, “never borrow to pay off bills.” Yet, isn’t that just what so many people do. They borrow from one to pay another then cry because there comes a time to pay the piper.

Live within your means, don’t spend money you don’t have and learn to identify what you need from what you want there is a difference.

A Great Singer

What kind of music do you sing?

“Aqua-pella.”

Don’t you mean a cappella, singing without instrumental
accompaniment?

“Nope. I mean aqua-pella, singing accompanied only by the water coming out of the shower-head.”

Thought for Today:
” Life is overflowing with the new. But it is necessary to empty out the old to make room for the new to enter.”

Tips and Techniques

Before complaining think about where your money has to be spent. Think about your budget and what work it is to keep it balanced, then think about how your government budgets. Do you set aside funds for certain expenditures? If you have a kid in college I am willing to bet your did. How many times have you lived beyond your means? You can tell that by how much your liabilities are as compared to your assets. Set a goal to get completely out of debt then work toward that end.
