What?? Fear!

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

Goodness! Tomorrow is already the last day of February. Are you on target for this month? Are you on target for this year?
In our goals class last night we talked about “fear” and “conditioning” as two of the elements that tend to hold us back from the achievement of a goal or goals. Fear is nothing more than a symptom, know that when you are working with individuals. There is always something underlying that fear. There is always a reason why. Do you know how to dig, how to pull the string to find out the real reason why a person does not act on what he knows deep down inside that he should be doing. You will be surprised when the real reason finally comes to the surface. Often times it is the drilled in, “don’t talk to strangers.” or “don’t speak until you are spoken to.”
Do check the calendar every day for all of the live and totally free classes being offered.

Ancient Castle

A group of American tourists were being guided
through an ancient castle in Europe. “This place,”
the guide told them, “is 600 years old. Not a stone
in it has been touched, nothing altered, nothing
replaced in all those years.”

“Wow,” said an appreciative member of the tour
group, “they must have the same landlord I have.”

The magic of the Web is hyperlinks. All it takes is a simple to do link from one page to anywhere on the Web that you want your visitor to see. The tag is A HREF: which means Anchor Hypertext Reference and of course is surrounded by the symbol. Make sure the text or image you use clearly indicates where the link will take users.
There are two kinds of links. The first called an absolute URL. It is a link that includes the full path to the new page. It begins with http://. The second is a relative URL and is used when creating a link to another page within your own website. If the Web page is stored in the same folder as the page that contains the link, then just name the page it will link to example

Columbus

Miss Hardy had been telling a 1st grade class the story of the discovery of America by Columbus. She concluded enthusiastically, “And all this happened more than 500 years ago.”

“Gosh!” exclaimed Billie, “What a memory you have!”

What are Web Browser Safe Colors?
Web browser safe colors are a set of 216 colors that can be accurately displayed on computers that display only 256 colors. The remaining 40 colors are used to display toolbars and other screen elements.
When a user with a computer that displays only 256 colors views your web page, the user’s web browser will attempt to simulate colors that are not in the set of Web browser safe colors by dithering. Here’s a new word for you! Dithering is a process in which colors are combined to produce another color. This can cause an image to appear grainy. Converting images to browser safe colors can help ensure that you will be happy with the way your image appears on a user’s computer.

Not Everyone Can

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

What’s happening this weekend? Are you excited about what is coming up or are you one of those millions that are just happy it is Friday? I know it used to feel that way when I worked at the hospital and I actually had a “real” weekend off.
Working for myself is the best thing I have ever done. I don’t have any schedules except those I set for myself and if I want to block off time to go do something else, there is nothing or no one that can stop me from doing that. The freedom is exhilarating.
I will say however, not everyone has the ability or fortitude to be in business. It takes a certain want to, that not everyone has or is able to cultivate. Anyone who wants to can learn the skills its just a matter of practice, not everyone has the stick-to-itiveness to get the job done.

John and Tony were in the bar, pondering over Tony’s problems. “Andrea and I want to get married,” said Tony, “but we can’t find anywhere to live.” “Why don’t you live with Andrea’s parents?” suggested John. “We can’t do that,” said Tony, “they’re living with their parents!”

Tips and Techniques

There are many things you can do to reduce the download time on an image or graphic. Of course cropping out all of the extraneous background noise is the first thing. Next you might reduce the image resolution or reduce the colors being used in the image. In PSP you can optimize for the Web by:
1. Choose File –> Export –>JPEG Optimizer. The JPEG Optimizer dialog opens. The preview windows show the current image on the left and the resulting JPEG file on the right.
2. Configure the settings on the Quality and Format tabs, and view estimated download times on the Download Times tab. For more information, see Choosing JPEG Optimizer Settings. or
3. Click the Use Wizard button to let Paint Shop Pro guide you through the process.

The Rule of Seven

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

Do you like surfing? What are you looking for when you surf? Or do you do a search for something on Yahoo or Google to find what you are looking for? Most people online who are looking for something specific type in key words at Google or Yahoo or their favorite search engines to find what they are looking for. Since this is the behavior of most people looking for something online doesn’t it stand to reason that you would want your site or service located on the search engines?
There are tons of theories as to how this all works. Search engines are run by computers. Computers can only identify a “string” or series of words, letters and numbers. Computers cannot read, they cannot judge quality they can only match characters. In truth, what the search engines are looking for today, may not be what they are programmed to look for tomorrow.
Paid for advertising is of course going to be listed first after all that is how the big sites make money. They provide information and charge for advertising following the off line magazine model. Pay per click advertising follows, then keyword rich sites that are hand submitted to the search engines.
Keyword rich – what does that mean? The rule of 7 applies.

Appendicitis

A motorcycle patrolman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix.
The doctors operated and advised him that all was well.
However, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling at the hairs on his chest.
Worried that it might be a second surgery the doctors hadn’t told him about, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown down enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable.
Taped firmly across his hairy chest were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn’t come off easily.
Written in large black letters was the sentence.
“Get well quick ….. from the nurse you gave a ticket to last week.”

Top Three Questions

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

What seems to be the three most asked questions about building a business on line?
#1 How do I make money with an on line business?
#2 How do I attract customers to my site? Not just surfers, but real actual customers.
#3 How do I get my business to work on automatic so that I honestly can work part time and earn a full time income?
Every day in my ezine you see ads from subscribers that all attempt to give you the solutions to these three questions or at least one of the three. For every person and every business the answers to those questions are not always the same. As an Internet Business Consultant to come up with answers to those questions, I have even more:
#1 How much money are we talking about? Do you have an exact figure in mind?
#2 Do you have your customer identified? Who exactly is your target market?
#3 Are you willing to sit at that computer, with an open mind and learn the pieces of technology it takes to put your business on automatic?
The courses are available, you just have to take advantage of them. Don’t just read those e-books, find the actions in them to do and then do something. Get yourself to class and webinars then put the knowledge gained into action.

After a long day on the course, the exasperated golfer turned to his caddy and said, “You must be the absolute worst caddy in the world!”

“No, I don’t think so,” said the caddy. “That would be too much of a coincidence.”

Tips and Techniques
Defining Image size
1. Start your image editing program. Of course again we are using PaintShop Pro.
2. Open the image you are working with
3. Position the mouse anywhere over the image – look to the status bar on the screen in the bottom right hand corner, this area displays the width and height of the image in pixels.
4. Make a note of the width and height “values”
5. Define the image size in your HTML In the tag change the number between the double quotes to the height and width in pixels you want the image to appear.
In many instances, you might want to have a thumbnail of the image on the page, then another page with the full size image to better show the features of an item.

Intro to Graphics

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

Why are graphics so important to a site style and design?
It all comes down to one word “attention” Graphics are normally attention getters. Graphics can help to tell the story. It is still true that a picture is worth 1000 words even on the Internet.
While there are thousands of “open source” pictures and clip art available on the web and in very inexpensive CDs you can buy at your local office supply store or super center, there is nothing quite so valuable as original art that you can produce from your digital camera or even your computer using a simple graphics program.
An easy beginners program is PrintShop from Broderbund – usually available in your office supply store for about $25.00 with thousands of clipart and fonts.
PaintShopPro is my design program of choice and over the next several days I will be going over some simple PSP tutorials. These are tutorials designed to teach you the skills you need to use PSP for every day design work.

Roast Beef

My boyfriend and I were lunching at a sidewalk cafe’
in Huntington Beach, CA. Our waitress looked like
a real surfer girl: athletic with a great tan and blonde
hair.

Mulling over the menu, my guy asked her if the roast
beef was rare.

The waitress gave us a stare and replied, “Well, no.
We have it, like, just about every day.”

Tips and Techniques

For the Web you want to convert your images to gif or jpeg and then optimize them for fast download. Traditionally, clipart is saved as a gif and photographs are saved as a jpeg. Most graphic programs will save images in a .png format so they remain editable. As a note: Always – Always – Always save an original in this format just in case you want to later go back to edit it for some reason.
To save to a gif or jpg and optimize do the following:
1. Start your image editing program
2. Open the image you want to convert to the gif or jpeg format
3. Click on FILE
4. Click SAVE AS
5. At this point you may want to give it a new name. (I use the same name with a number after it indicating the number of times it is changed)
6. Click the drop down menu which will list the available formats
7. Choose the gif or jpg format and save
8. PSP will also give you the option to optimize for the Web, choose best from the drop down menu and save with a new number. (I usually put opt in from the number to indicate an optimized graphic.)

Preparation

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

Looks like things are getting back to normal again. The children are back to school after a week and temperatures will be back in the 40s starting tomorrow. Two, almost three weeks in the teens is long enough. Winter brings several challenges and this year in some places cold was experienced where it rarely goes.
Business can sometimes behave like the weather. And just like getting control in times of heat and cold it takes preparation, forethought and action to weather business flux.
What do we do to prepare?
Realize there are going to be rough times. Keep saving at least a part of your profits every month tucked away for that proverbial rainy day.
Plant the seeds daily, know in your heart that the harvest will come.
Nurture those seeds with good follow up. People do appreciate tasteful reminders.

Tips and Techniques

Graphics can be the most fun part of design and they can also be one of the most hair pulling parts of design. My favorite graphics editor is Paint Shop Pro and is yet one of the easiest to work with. It has many of the same features of Photo Shop at about 1/6th the cost.
Creating banners is one of the first skills you will want to master when using a graphics program. With PSPs built in sizes making a banner is done in just a few quick steps.
1. Open PSP
2. Click on FILE - New
3. There will be a pull down menu of preset sizes
4. For this tutorial choose the half banner at 234X60, choose a raster background, 16 million colors, and transparent. Click OK
5. Set the background color by right clicking then choose color
6. Set the foreground color by left clicking then choose color
7. Fill the space with color using the paint can – flood fill tool
8. Choose the text tool, notice the properties bar changes to text
9. Write the word Welcome
10. Highlight the word to change the font name and size
11. Now all you have to do is adjust where it appears using the handles to change its size and the cross bar in the center of the graphic to move the text to another position.
Master just that skill and you can make banners of any size and put text where ever you want it in the banner.
