You Must Do It

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Did you get everything done today that you planned to get done?

Did you get everything done this week that you planned to get done?

We are nearly in the last week of the month, are you on target for getting your goals accomplished?

If you have to say, “I don’t know.” or “no” or even, ‘I don’t even know what I am doing anymore.” then maybe you should not even try to be in business for your self. Being in business does take planning and more important it takes an execution of that plan to the results you have set out for yourself.

Now comes the biggest question of all, do you even know what you want your business to do? I know, you just want to make money. And, you can’t understand you have designed your web site. It isn’t very good, but you have a website. You have found eBooks that you purchased for a few dollars with a promise that you can resell them and make a fortune, but you haven’t sold a single one. You tell yourself, “if other people have done it, why can’t I?”

There is much to learn to make a living on the web, but it is possible to learn what there is and it is possible to earn an income, but you have to do the work.

Lost Cell Phone

When a customer left his cell phone in my store,
I scrolled through his saved numbers, stopped
at “Mom” and pushed Send.

His mother answered and I told her what happened.

“Don’t worry,” she said. “I’ll take care of it.”

A few minutes later, the cell phone rang.

It was “Mom.”

“Martin,” she said. “You left your cell phone at the convenience store.”

Thought for Today:
“Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It’s not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s when you’ve had everything to do, and you’ve done it.” –Margaret Thatcher

Tips and Techniques

Be totally honest with yourself. Let’s write some goals shall we.

1. Before I die, I want to ….

2. By the end of this year I want to have …

3. During the month of April I must …

Once you do this, you can begin to plan how, but you must must must know the what before you can begin.

Performance Matters

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

In our Reach to Achieve class we talk about the various kinds of goals as being lifetime, long term, short term, this year (business plan) this month, this week and today. There is still one more type of goal that cannot be omitted from the list.

Proper goal setting is a very powerful and effective technique that can yield strong returns in all areas of life. At its simplest level the process of setting goals and targets allows you to choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know what you have to concentrate on and improve, and what is merely a distraction to your focus.

By setting goals and measuring their achievement, you are aboe to see what you have done and what you are capable of. The process of achieving goals and seeing their achievement builds confidence and self belief needed to achieve higher and more difficult goals.

It is very important to set not only outcome goals but also performance goals, you see there is such a thing as getting something done to get it out of the way and there is getting someting done that will in fact rock your world.

As infantrymen stationed in the Panama Canal Zone,
we’d often complain that the enlisted men’s barracks
didn’t have refrigerators. After one particularly hot
day of maneuvers in the tropical sun, I returned to
find out that I’d received orders for transfer to Fort
Wainwright in Alaska.

My buddies teased me, saying that when I got to
Alaska I would find out what the Army did with all
their refrigerators.

I arrived at Fort Wainwright at the end of December.
Sure enough, each enlisted man’s room had an
Army-issued refrigerator.

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Tips and Techniques
Go ahead and make plans to achieve your dreams, just be sure to keep the results within your control as much as possible. If you think you can do 10% better than you are doing right now great, but if you know you are capaple of a 2% increase and actually do it you will soon believe the 10% is possible.

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking
There are very few guarantees in life, yet one thing is certain, “if you never attempt anything, you’ll never accomplish anything.” I don’t know who said that but whoever did said a mouthful.

If you never try you can’t ever fail, but boy what a miserable life you will be living.

I also don’t know how many people I have talked to that have told me that when the going was rough, was the best times of their lives. Working to accomplish something – something great, well I hate to tell you but you gotta overcome a lot of barriers.

You have got to have a purpose. A cause. A goal. An idea to chase. A dream that you’re acting on to build the mental fortitude necessary to keep you going through the difficulties that you encounter. make yourself a plan. Never mind how crazy it seems, and start working that plan as soon as you can. You goal may seem far away but the only want to get close is just move toward it.

Sarah, my teenage granddaughter was nervous as
she took the wheel for her first driving lesson.
As she was pulling out of the parking lot, the instructor
said, “Turn left here and don’t forget to let the people
behind you know what you’re doing.”

She turned to the students sitting in the back seat and
announced, “I’m turning left!”

Tips and Techniques

A goal is nothing until you put a plan with it. A plan is nothing until you put it into action. Taking action is just the beginning. Seeing a plan through to completion despite anything and everything can see big things happening. Preparation is not fun or exciting, it can be tedious and unfulfilling in the short term. Yet it is absolutely essential. To to enjoy success you must discipline yourself day after day to develop your skills, increase your knowledge and lay the groundwork to total success.

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Welcome to day two of 2009. If you have been working on your business plan for the year, you are probably right now thinking about what is it you want to do with this year.

There are two documents that you should pull out of the drawer and take a look at again. The first one is your Lifetime goals. Now, it is true if you were working from a business plan last year, your list of Lifetime Goals and Last years business plan would be on your clipboard and not in your desk drawer, but all too often by the 10th of January those goals, those resolutions are long forgotten.

Your task today is to look at those documents and check off everything that was in fact completed.

OK, so how did that make you feel? Did you stay on target for the year? Is it showing you clearly which areas in your business life you need to work on?

What! You don’t have either of these documents. Please my friends this year let’s do it right. Sit down and write you Lifetime goals. This is simply the list that begins, “Before I die I want to…” Since the movies the Bucket List and Last Holiday the Lifetime goals were enforced because people come to find out there is very little time left. What if you knew you had only six months left what would you do?

If you haven’t watched either of these two movies, go do it today at least the Bucket List. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. Just remember none of us is promised tomorrow make good use of the day you have.

Canine Division

A friend of mine is a deputy with the sheriff’s
department canine division. One evening, the
deputy was dispatched to the scene of a possible
burglary, where he discovered the back door of
a building ajar. He let the dog out of his patrol car
and commanded it to enter and seek.

Jumping from the back seat, the dog headed for the
building. After lunging through the doorway, the dog
froze and backed out. My friend was puzzled until
he investigated further. Then he noticed the sign on
the building: “Veterinarian’s office.”

Ice Breakers

A doctor goes out and buys the best car on the market, a brand new Ferrari GTO It is also the most expensive car in the world, and it costs him $500,000.

He takes it out for a spin and stops at a red light.

An old man on a Moped, looking about 100 years old, pulls up next to him. The old man looks over at the sleek shiny car and asks, “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?”

The doctor replies, “A Ferrari GTO. It cost half a million dollars!”

“That’s a lot of money,” says the old man. “Why does it cost so much?”

“Because this car can do up to 250 miles an hour!” states the doctor proudly.

The Moped driver asks, “Mind if I take a look inside?”

“No problem,” replies the doctor.

So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Then, sitting back on his Moped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car, all right… but I’ll stick with my Moped!”

Just then the light changes, so the doctor decides to show the old man just what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds, the speedometer reads 150 mph.

Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear what it could be and suddenly. WHHHOOOOOOSSSSSHHH!

Something whips by him going much faster! “What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?” the doctor asks himself. He floors the accelerator and takes the Ferrari up to 175 mph.

Then, up ahead of him, he sees that it’s the old man on the Moped! Amazed that the Moped could pass his Ferrari, he gives it more gas and passes the moped at 210 mph.

He’s feeling pretty good until he looks in his mirror and sees the old man gaining on him AGAIN!
Astounded by the speed of his old guy, he floors the gas pedal and takes the Ferrari all the way up to 250 mph.

Not ten seconds later,he sees the Moped bearing down on him again! The Ferrari is flat out, and there’s nothing he can do!

Suddenly, the Moped plows into the back of his Ferrari, demolishing the rear end.

The doctor stops and jumps out and ,unbelievably , the old man is still alive. He runs up to the mangled old man and says, “Oh My Gosh! Is there anything I can do for you?”

The old man whispers, “Yeah…Unhook my suspenders from your side mirror.”

Random Acts of Thinking

Part the Fourth, 2007

I want to become a vegetarian, but I’m not sure I can quit eating meat cold turkey.

I wear glasses. Doesn’t that mean that *everything* I see
is an optical illusion?

I paid my psychiatrist with a reality check.

Do fisherman live in the reel world?

You want to know a really, really hugely annoyingly bad habit? Overexaggeration.

I may not be a great artist, but I am really good at drawing a blank.

My wife and I love each other. I rub her back and she massages my ego.

When he who lives in a glass house invites he who is without sin for dinner, bad things can happen.

You can’t stop progress, but you can unplug a good chunk of it. A chrysanthemum by any other name … would be easier to spell.

Some days the best thing about my job is that the chair spins.

My life no longer needs an extreme makeover. Now it just needs a complete do over.

A friend of mine has a nose ring. She keeps the volume pretty low, though, and sets it to “vibrate” at the movies.

I’m not too handy with tools. I once got my finger caught in a screwdriver.

Yesterday I pushed my luck. It was clearly too weak to move by itself.

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

It is a common belief that management and leadership are the same role. While it is common that a manager also plays the part of the leader, these two roles are truly separate in function and in the way they add to the success of an organization. By understanding the difference between management and leadership you will become more effective in helping others see the road ahead.

To understand the difference between management and leadership,
consider the construction of a new road. To build that road there are workers, machinery and tools which are all vital in the road’s construction. Managers help ensure those workers, machinery and tools work together in the most efficient way possible. A manager makes sure those workers are well-trained, motivated, rested and that they know what they’re supposed to do next. The manager does the same thing with the tools and the machinery to make sure that they’re working correctly and that the workers are able to use them efficiently and safely. This is the role of management. On the other hand, a leader makes sure that the road is going in the right direction before the
construction begins. That leader also monitors conditions in new situations to ensure that the road under construction is still the correct one and is still going in the right direction.

How does this affect you as a leader? Are you spending your time managing people when you should be making sure that the road ahead is the one that you want to be on? To expect to be an effective leader you must present a clear vision and a trail you are willing to walk on first. While there are times when it is appropriate for a leader to fill a management role, it is vital to understand the difference between leadership and management so you can be effective no matter which role you happen to be filling at a given time. If you are a leader
overseeing managers, it is important that you provide them with
the correct perspective so they may be effective in their management role. Don’t manage the managers. Lead them.

If you are not in a formal leadership role, it is also important that you understand that when a leadership opportunity arises there is a difference between being a leader and managing the effort. Even if you end up filling both sets of shoes it’s important to understand the difference in roles in order to fill them effectively. If, on the other hand, you learn how to lead by showing people that you are walking down
the right road, you will become a natural leader and will be able to help many others find success as your achieve your own.
