Let’s Explore Databases

Our tutorial this month will help you get started with databases. We explore together the process using OO Base database software, importing spreadsheets into databases, using the Structured Query Language and more.

The Structured Query Language (SQL) makes up one of the fundamental building blocks of modern database architecture. SQL defines the methods used to create and manipulate relational databases on all major platforms.

At first glance, the language may seem intimidating and complex but it’s really not all that bad. In a series of articles over the next few weeks we’ll explore the inner workings of SQL together. By the time we’re through, you’ll have the fundamental knowledge you need to go out there and start working with databases!

OO Base comes loaded with several databases so rather than start from scratch we are going to get the feel for it by creating a rolodex using a premade database and then learn how to adjust what is premade into something that will serve your purpose.

Talented Dog

A salesman dropped in to see a business customer.
Not a soul was in the office except a big dog emptying
wastebaskets. The salesman stared at the animal,
wondering if his imagination could be playing tricks
on him.

The dog looked up and said, “Don’t be surprised.
This is just part of my job.”

“Incredible!” exclaimed the man. “I can’t believe it!

Does your boss know what a prize he has in you?
An animal that can talk!”

“No, no,” pleaded the dog. “Please don’t! If that man
finds out I can talk, he’ll make me answer the phone
as well!”

Why does an S.Q.L. database mean so much to you? When you work on the Internet any time you add interactivity to a website it can’t be done with plain ol’ HTML. It needs something more. That something more is scripting of one kind or another. Two of the most widely used are cgi and S.Q.L.

If you are hosting with a company that uses the c-panel interface, adding PHP scripts with S.Q.L. is such an easy thing to do. As a matter of fact it is done in three easy steps. If you hosting company also supports Fantastico, PHP scripts like the word press blog, a shopping cart, help desk and many other scripts can be added with two, count them two only clicks of the mouse.

Databases and Achieving Your Goals

Why is it most people who know goals are important to have and even more important to get accomplished, never get them accomplished?

The biggest reason is lack of organization. Funny how that comes up as a reason for so many things not getting done. Hmm!

Well, lets look at what a database is. To begin with databases are designed to offer an organized instrument for storing, managing and retrieving information. That’s easy enough, right?

Take a look at that rolodex you have sitting on your desk. Actually this is a physical form of a
database. Oh Yes, and that file cabinet that sits next to your left hand in your desk, well that is another physical database. You use these files to organize, store and manage physical information.

Consider each card in your rolodex as a record. Each of these records contain certain information like a name, address, phone number, city, state, zip code. They can be filed in alphabetical order by last name.

They can be stored in alphabetical order by business and then by last name, but what if you wanted to cross reference your records? Doing that with a physical database is not impossible and compaanies for centuries have been doing just that.

Now goals are records too. Each record can contain information like, name of the project, to-do number, begin date, end date, description of the to-do to name a few. Let’s look for a minute at the rules for the accomplishment of a goal. According our Goals Guide there are 4 basic steps:
1. Write down your goal
2. Give yourself a deadline
3. Set your standards high
4. Break it down into small steps

So how is a database going to help you to do this?

Databases work through the use of tables. If you’re familiar with spreadsheets like Open Office Calc, you’re probably already accustomed to storing data in tabular form. It’s not much of a stretch to make the leap from spreadsheets to databases. Let’s take a look. Database Tables Just like Calc tables, database tables consist of columns and rows. Each column contains a different type of attribute (attribute is just a technical term meaning characteristic) and each row corresponds to a single record.

For example, imagine that we were building a database table that replaces the physical rolodex, we would write a table which contains names and telephone numbers. We’d probably set up columns named “FirstName”, “LastName” and “TelephoneNumber.” Then we’d simply start
adding rows underneath those columns that contained the data we’re planning to store. This is the simplest form of database to build.

After a hardy West Virginia rainstorm filled all the
potholes in the streets and alleys, a young mother
watched her two little boys playing in the puddle
through her kitchen window.

The older of the two, a five year old lad, grabbed
his sibling by the back of his head and shoved his
face into the water hole.

As the boy recovered and stood laughing and
dripping, the mother runs to the yard in a panic.
“Why on earth did you do that to your little brother?!”
she says as she shook the older boy in anger.
“We were just playing ‘church’ mommy” he said. “I
was baptizing him in the name of the Father, the
Son and in the hole-he-goes.

What do I write down?

For every person the goal is very specific and in most cases very different. But for sure if you are planning to build a business online or off there are some that are the same in all cases.

1. Decide what business you are in
2. Decide where you want to build your business
3. Write a good business plan. Let me ask you, With your current affiliations how are you going to earn $500.00 next week? If you don’t know how, then you don’t have a business plan.

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

We all have our insecurities.

Nobody is perfect.

We always wish we had better things, better features, better body parts, etc. But life need not be perfect for people to be happy about themselves or with themselves.

Do you know of anyone who wants to be unhappy? Neither do I. On the outside, it may seem that they are only happy when they can complain or try to bring everyone down. Remember that is self-esteem at it’s lowest.

Self improvement and loving yourself is not a matter of shouting to the whole world that you are perfect and you are the best. It’s the virtue of acceptance and contentment. When we begin to improve ourselves, we then begin to feel contented and happy.

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her name plate that the teller’s name is Patricia Whack.

So, he says, “Mrs. Whack, I’d like to get a loan to buy a boat and go on a long vacation.” Patti looks at the frog in disbelief and asks how much he wants to borrow.

The frog says “$30,000.” The teller asks his name and the frog says that his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it is OK, he knows the bank manager.

Patti explains that $30,000 is a substantial amount of money and that he will need to secure some collateral against the loan. She asks if he has anything he can use as collateral.

The frog says, “Sure. I have this,” and produces a tiny pink porcelain pig, about half an inch tall. Bright pink and perfectly formed.

Very confused, Patti explains that she’ll have to consult with the manager and disappears into a back office.

She finds the manager and says: “There is a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000. And he wants to use this as collateral.”

She holds up the tiny pink pig.
“I mean, what the heck is this?”

(are you ready?)

(are you sure?)

(here it comes!!!)

The bank manager looks back at her and says,
“It’s a knick knack, Patti Whack.
Give the frog a loan.
His old man’s a Rolling Stone.”

Knowledge is power! Have you heard that one? Knowledge is only power when it is put into action. Self help books, tapes or seminars are great, but if they only sit on a shelf and never get put to use – well I think you get the picture.

Read first for familiarity with the text
Read second for understanding
Then read a third time to locate and put to work the strategy that will help to propel you then in doing so, you will propel your business to greatness.

Love Yourself

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

One of Whitney Houston’s songs says “Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all.” True enough. In order to love others, you must love yourself too. Remember, you cannot give what you do not have.

Before telling other people ways in which to improve themselves, let them see that you yourself iwant to be a representative and product of continual self improvement.

Self improvement makes us better people. When we become better people it becomes easier to inspire others. When we inspire others, we may never know how far that reach may go.

Cancel the thinking of yourself as a second-rate being. Forget the repetitive thoughts:

“If only I was richer…
if only I was thinner”
if only …

Accepting your true self is the first step to self improvement. We need to stop comparing ourselves to others only to find out at the end that we’ve got 10 more reasons to envy them.

An out-of-towner accidentally drives his car into a deep ditch on the side of a country road.

Luckily a farmer happened by with his big old horse named Benny.

The man asked for help and the farmer said Benny could pull his car out.

So he backed Benny up and hitched him to the man’s car bumper. Then he yelled:

Pull, Nellie,
pull!

Benny didn’t move.

Then he yelled”

Come on,
Pull Ranger!

Still, Benny didn’t move.

Then he yelled really loud:

Now pull, Fred….
pull hard!

Benny just stood there.

Then the farmer nonchalantly said:

Ok, Benny…
now pull.

Benny pulled the car out of the ditch.
The man was very appreciative but curious. He asked the farmer: “I really appreciate that, but why did you call your horse by the wrong name three times?

“Why old Bennie is blind and if he thought he was the only one pulling he wouldn’t even try.

Good Morning!

One key to self improvement is to LISTEN and TALK to a trusted friend. Find someone who you are comfortable with. This person should be one who will not judgemental but able to listen to whatever you have to say. Opening up with even the most gentle topics you want to discuss is not always an easy thing to do.

Ask questions like

“Do you think I am ill-mannered?”
“Do I always sound argumentative?”
“Do I talk too loud?”
“Does my breath smell?”
“Do I ever bore you when were together?”.

In this way, the other person should be able to see that you are interested in the process of self improvement.

Listen for comments and constructive criticisms. I know that it is difficult sometimes to listen, just don’t be tempted to give back answers like

“Don’t exaggerate!
That’s just the way I am!”

Open up your mind and heart as well. Take notes showing the friend that you are truly interested in what she has to say. More important, be interested in what she has to say. Good friends will be truthful with you, but even for them it is sometimes quite difficult. Don’t you find it hard to tell someone something, anything that you feel will hurt their feelings?

A Tiny Guide

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Isn’t it funny? We look at other people, envy them for looking so outrageously perfect and wish we could trade places with them, while they look at us and think of the same thing. We are insecure of other people who themselves are insecure of us. We suffer from low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence and lose hope in self improvement because we are living lives in quiet desperation.

Sometimes, you notice that you have an irritating habit like biteing off your finger nails, having a foul mouth, and you – of all people, is the last to know.

I have a friend who never gets tired of talking. And in most conversations, she is the only one who seems to be interested in the things she has to say. So many of our other friends tend to avoid her whenever she’s around, and she doesn’t even notice how badly she became socially handicapped – gradually affecting the people in her environment.

This week we will take a brief look at the importance of postitve self examination and positive self improvement. There is nothing to gain in shame, blame and regret. Our Constitution allows that we have the freedom to persue happiness so let’s look at what it does take to be truly happy.

Couldn’t Spell

Mrs. Jones was reading a letter at breakfast.

Suddenly she looked up suspiciously at her husband.

“Henry,” she said, “I’ve just received a letter from mother saying she isn’t accepting our invitation to come and stay, as we do not appear to want her.

What does she mean by that? I told you to write and say that she was to come at her own convenience. You did write, didn’t you?”

“Er, yes, I did,” said the husband.

“But I, I couldn’t spell ‘convenience,’ so I made it ‘risk.'”

Have you ever heard the expression “inspirational dissatisfaction”?

This is the thing that puts the imagination to work. I know that you have heard that “necessity is the mother of invention.” Anger, fear, hate, anamosity, and jealousy are all of those emotions we attempt to avoid at all costs. Think a minute about what it is that made you angry. Think about what fear you just encountered. Inside all of these negative emotions is a seed for a positive behavior, but you have to be aware of it. You have to find the seed. You have to nurture it and make it grow by using the gift of inspirational dissatisfaction. Don’t grumble, gripe or complain. Think about the cause and become a problem solver.

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Sometimes, when all our doubts, fears and insecurities wrap ourselves up, we always come up with the idea of “I wish I was somebody else.” More often than not, we think and believe that someone or rather, most people are better than us.- when in reality, the fact is, most people are just as scared and insecure as we are..

You spot a totally eye-catching girl sitting by herself at a party, casually sipping on a glass of wine. You think to yourself, “she looks so perfectly calm and confident.” But if you could read thru a transparent mind, you would see clouds of thoughts and you might just be amazed that she’s thinking “are people talking about why I am seated here alone?… Why don’t guys find me
attractive?

I don’t like my ankles, they look too skinny
I wish I was as intelligent as my best friend.”

We look at a young business entrepreneur and say “Wooh… what else could he ask for?” He stares at himself at the mirror and murmur to himself,

“I hate my big eyes…
I wonder why my friends won’t talk to me…
I hope mom and dad would still work things out.”

What Time Is It?

On some air bases, the Air Force is on one side of the field and civilian aircraft use the other side of the field, with the control tower in the middle.

One day the tower received a call from an aircraft asking, “What time is it?”

The tower responded, “Who is calling?”

The aircraft replied, “What difference does it make?”

The tower replied, “It makes a lot of difference. If it is an American Airlines flight, it is 3 o’clock. If it is anAir Force plane, it is 1500 hours.

If it is a Navy aircraft,it is 6 bells.

If it is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3.

If it is a Marine Corps aircraft, it’s Thursday afternoon and 120 minutes to “Happy Hour.’

Information is worthless unless you put it to work. Too often our shelves become burdoned with books that may or may not be read. If read, ideas come to us, but if those ideas are not followed by action what good are they.

Listen for your own negative self talk be conscious of it. There is power in telling that negative thought to “get behind me.” Use very strong words like cancel or delete each time one of these thoughts appear then replace with the powerful words do it now!
