The GIGO Syndrome

Good Morning!
I Have Been Thinking

Another one of those days when I don’t believe I have been but oh my has my mind been working over time. Did you know that thinking, thinking, thinking never accomplishes much? I read somewhere that the human mind processes hundreds of thousands of thoughts every single day and yet the individual acts on a very few of them. Because the mind is continually working it is easy to become scattered and that is why focus on goals is such an all important thing.

Way back in the 70s when computers were just coming into their own we heard a lot about a phrase – GIGO (Garbage in garbage out) Computers are programmed to respond in a certain manner and while our mind is not a computer nor is it actually programmed, feed it garbage and what comes out is garbage.

• Do you tend to watch the news habitually every day?
• Do you begin every morning reading the newspaper?
• Do you enjoy reading off color materials?
• Are you easily angered by circumstances beyond your immediate control. (traffic jams as an example)
• How many hours a day do you spend watching television? What kind of television are you watching?
• How much time do you spend at your computer playing games or mindlessly surfing the Internet?

How do you prevent the GIGO syndrome? Consciously get attuned to what your mind is doing! Not quite as easy as it might seem, but when you take an active role in the form of focus and positive affirmations you will begin to see big differences in the actions you take closer to the achievement of goals.

This old lady went to a doctor’s office and told him that she has bad gas, but you can’t smell it or hear it. So the doctor gives her two pills and tells her take them and come back tomorrow. She came back and said that you can’t hear the gas but now you can smell it.

Then the doctor says, ”Good now we can work on your hearing.”

The Back Button is one of the most important Web buttons on any Web page, and yet most Web designers don’t think of it when they’re building their pages. In fact, it’s very common to see “back to home” or “back to start” or just “back” links built into the pages that they are designing. But unless these links have built in logic that knows exactly where the customer was before they clicked (like the browser back button does), then these links are somewhat useless to the visitor.
Don’t take away the back button from your readers. You won’t stop them from leaving, but you might stop them from coming back. Learn to take Advantage of the Back Button
Most people know that already that one of the quickest ways to leave a site is simply to click the back button. Your job as a designer is to be aware that your customers want to use the back button, and plan for it. For example:
• Place your branding up near the back button
While most people don’t really need to look when they’re clicking back, placing your brand up there will get it more attention when they leave.
• Make items in that area clickable
Your logo should be clickable, but other text elements that are in the upper left area of your page should be clickable as well. That way, if they miss the back button, they might go somewhere else useful on your site.
• Use server logs to find out where they came from
If you know what they’re going back to, you can address that right on the page, perhaps even with dynamic elements that only display when they come from that location. For example, someone coming from a search engine might not know the best ways to search your site. If you include details like how to search on the pages when they come from a search engine you might get them to stay longer.

Let It Shine

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

Do you know what the word enthusiasm means? It’s origin is from the Greek “theo” and means God within It is no wonder that Charles Kingsley wrote all we have to do is to be enthusiastic about something and we can be very happy.
One of the songs we sang as a kid was
“This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine
This little light of mine,
I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.

Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m gonna let it shine
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m gonna let it shine
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m gonna let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.”

It is our responsibility to let the light inside each of us shine. When it does it appears as enthusiasm in what we do. I’ll just bet when you sign this little song you can’t help but smile and feel better. Have a great day!

A young woman was worried about her stress-related habit of biting her fingernails down to the quick, so her friend advised her to take up yoga. She did, and soon her finger nails were growing normally. Her friend asked her if yoga had totally cured her nervousness.

‘No,’ she replied, ‘but now I can reach my toe-nails so I bite them instead.’

Tips and Techniques

Do you link your images?

If you don’t, you should. When watching customers use Web pages, especially with click tracing software, you will find that images are very popular to click on. Even if they don’t look like buttons. So if you’re not making your images “hot” then you’re missing out on an opportunity to take your readers to other locations on your site.

People like to skim the Web and they like to look at pictures. If you make your pictures do something beyond just decorate your page, you’ll be assisting your readers and making your site more interesting. Pictures are visually stimulating, much more than words alone but you already know that. Now go a step farther and link your pictures to the next big thing you want your readers to see.

What does it take to sell another person’s products? There are a good many programs on the Internet that announce their affiliate programs or products that have resell rights or even products that have Clickbank or Paypal downloads. If you already have an opt-in list of people that have purchased from you in the past, then they might take your suggestion and purchase one of these back end products. If you have a list of 10 to 20,000 subscribers you could very well sell 10 or 20 of these back end products simply by sending out a special notice to your list.

You could spend hours of every day promoting your campaigns to all of the search engines or even by placing the ads in a rotation like the one at “Magic Highway.” But realistically, how many of these pages or links can you promote in a day?
So how do you work several opportunities and have more than one income source? Can it be done?

There are two ways that you can have several income sources. One is by pairing products with a major or flagship product. These consist of product that “go together” in a mix an match fashion. They can be adequately promoted in a 6 or 7 series auto responder course or follow up program. Promoting the auto responder instead of all the little programs will help to build your own opt-in list while at the same time sell those other people’s products.

The second way is by having a site of your own where you can promote all of the links you want to promote but only work on promoting that one site. A portal page is a very good way to go. Using a portal page to also promote your Amazon affiliation or Google ads can also help to build up popularity to you site.
Once your site and auto responder system are in place your major job begins. Promote your business not someone else’s.

Young man Murphy applied for an engineering position at an Irish firm based in Dublin. An American applied for the same job and both applicants having the same qualifications were asked to take a test by the department manager.

Upon completion of the test, both men only missed one of the questions. The manager went to Murphy and said, ‘Thank you for your interest, but we’ve decided to give the American the job.’ Murphy asked, ‘And why would you be doing that? We both got nine questions correct. This being Ireland, and me being Irish I should get the job!’ The manager said, ‘We have made our decision not on the correct answers, but rather on the question that you missed.’
Murphy then asked, ‘And just how would one incorrect answer be better than the other?’ The manager replied, ‘Well, the American put down on question #5, ‘I don’t know.’ You put down, ‘Neither do I.’

I Have Been Thinking

I had to think long and hard about what Howard Aiken said, but then had to conclude that he is so right. Take a look at the junk mail that is received every day. If the stuff is totally unbelievable or the off color jokes they readily get passed on via e-mail or acted upon by so many really gullible people. The good stuff, the heartwarming stories get passed over.

What is it about people? And yes, it starts very young this idea of being so different that they are just like everyone else. This idea that they have to fit in with the crowd in order to be accepted. This idea of instant gratification through get rich schemes.

Why is it people will almost always believe the worst in others and themselves before they will look for the good things. I do believe we are our own worst critics and our own enemies. Just like the body will fight infections that aren’t there and turn on itself we allow our minds to rely on the garbage that it gets fed because after all isn’t junk food better than the stuff that is healthy and good for you?

Two nuns were shopping in a food store and happened to be passing the beer and liquor section. One asks the other if she would like a beer. The other nun answered that would be good, but that she would feel uncomfortable about purchasing it. The first nun said that she would handle it and picked up a six pack and took it to the cashier.

The cashier had a surprised look and the first nun said, ‘The beer is for washing our hair.’ The cashier, without blinking an eye, reached under the counter and put a package of pretzels in the bag with the beer. ‘Here you go, sister,’ she said, ‘don’t forget the curlers.’

Don’t Forget

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

What a wonderful day we had! I hope that yours was as good if not better. I managed to keep a few traditions even though I didn’t do any of the cooking. I watched the Miracle on 34th St (the original one) and the entire Thanksgiving Day parade. I was good though and didn’t eat too much.

I will be away from my desk for the next few days however so if you need to reach me do leave a message and I will get back with you on Monday.

I posted the October e-Book. It is available free. This time I did not password protect the book, but if you want it branded with your own links it is still payable through PayPal at $9.95. The book is available at http://www.cwinsonline.com/fileseek/downloads/102006.exe

A blonde calls her boyfriend and says, “Please come over here and help me…..I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get it started”. Her boyfriend asks, “What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?” The blonde says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a tiger.” Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says,
“First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a tiger”. He held her hand and said, “Second, I’d advise you to relax. Let’s have a cup of coffee, then ………..” he sighed, “let’s put all these Frosted Flakes back in the box.”

Over the River

Good Morning!

I Have Been Thinking

Over the river and through the woods! Seems like that is still
the tradition of this season. Thanksgiving week sees more
travelers than any single week of the year!

The day after Thanksgiving, fondly known as Black Friday is the
biggest shopping day of the year. Will you be one of the brave
ones to stand in line for hours to pick up that one bargain?
The day after Thanksgiving also means 31 days until Christmas.
There are gifts to buy, packages to wrap, cards to send and of
course the house to decorate, but what a fun time it is and what
a world of happy memories. I love this time of year. The less
there are money worries, the more you can enjoy the holidays. If
you business hasn’t done what you expected it to do in 2006 then
it is time to find a mentor my friend so 2007 can be a much
better year.

A man in a Jaguar passed a mini that had broken down by the side
of the road. Being a kindly driver, he stopped and fixed a
tow-rope to it and began towing it to the nearest garage.
After 10 minutes of towing, a Porsche passed them at high speed.
The Jaguar driver was not going to be outdone by a Porsche, so,
forgetting that he had a mini in tow, slammed his foot down and
the Jaguar and Porsche indulged in a high-speed race down the
road, the Skoda and it’s occupant trailing wildly about at the
end of the rope frantically trying to attract their attention and
failing.
A Police car saw them and gave chase. The Police driver radioed
back to Headquarters “Sarge, you’ll never believe this, I’ve just
seen a Porsche and a Jaguar neck and neck
doing 150 mph – and a bloke in a mini flashing his lights,
blowing his horn and trying to overtake them!”

What is HTML?
HTML
Hypertext markup language is the language of the Web. All Web
pages are written in HTML. HTML defines the way that images,
multimedia, and text are displayed in Web browsers. It includes
tags to connect your documents (hypertext) and make your Web
documents interactive (forms).
HTML is a defined standard markup language. That standard was
developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). It is based
upon SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). It is a
language that uses tags to define the structure and some style of
your text. Tags are defined by the characters.
But HTML is no longer the most current standard for Web
development. As HTML was developed it got more and more
complicated and the style and content tags combined into one
language. Eventually, the W3C decided that there was a need for a
separation between the style of a Web page and the content. A tag
that defines the content alone, such as

, would remain in
HTML while, tags that define style, such as , are
deprecated in the latest version of HTML in favor of style
sheets.
